How to Swaddle a Baby: A Step-by-Step Guide

To keep your baby safe and happy, it's important to swaddle them the right way. Here's how to wrap a baby in a swaddle:

Using a Blanket:

  1. Spread the swaddling blanket out on a level surface in the shape of a diamond, then fold the top corner down approximately 6 inches to make a straight edge.
  2. Place your baby on their back, with their head above the folded border of the blanket and arms at their sides.
  3. Wrap the left corner of the blanket over your baby, tucking it under their right arm.
  4. Tuck the blanket's bottom corner up over your baby's feet and into the top of the swaddle.
  5. Wrap the right corner over your baby, tucking it under their left arm.

Using a Baby Swaddle Suit:

  1. Lay the swaddle suit flat with the zipper or snaps facing upwards.
  2. Gently place your baby inside on their back with their legs straight.
  3. Secure the swaddle by fastening the zipper or snaps.
  4. Ensure your baby is comfortable and not overheating.

The goal is to create a secure wrap that gives comfort and security without causing discomfort or obstructing breathing. Following these steps will allow you to master the art of swaddling, ensuring that your baby feels safe, secure, and comfortable.

When to Stop Swaddling

It is advisable to stop swaddling your baby at two months old or when they begin to roll over. At this point, switching to a sleeping bag or wearable blanket can be a safe option, allowing for more flexibility of movement while still giving some warmth and security.
